It’s Showtime, Folks
Movies in Avondale Park returns Thursday Sept. 3 with a four-week run of family-friendly films
In September, when the sunlight goes down, the movie camera will turn on and the big-screen action will begin. Yes, it is time once again for Movies at Avondale Park, a family-friendly free event held each Thursday evening throughout the month at the park’s historic amphitheater.
This year’s lineup will begin on Sept. 3 with a showing of Beethoven, the 1992 comedy about a big dog – a really big dog – and the adoptive family that loves him, slobber and all. That will be followed by the baseball classic A League of Their Own (no crying allowed) on Sept. 10, the offbeat semi-musical School of Rock on Sept. 17, and finally the romantic comedy The Parent Trap on Sept. 24.
Open seating starts at 6 p.m., and a local musician will perform for approximately 45 minutes leading up to showtime. This year’s musical lineup consists of Taylor Hollingsworth on Sept. 3, Girls Rock Bham on Sept. 10, McKenzie Mason on Sept. 17, and Rebecca Egeland on Sept. 24.
The movies will start shortly after sundown, ranging from approximately 7:30 early in the month to closer to 7:00 as the daytime gets shorter later in the month.
“One of the missions of Friends of Avondale Park is to fully utilize every aspect of the park and bring vibrancy and events to it,” FOAP board president Daniel Neumann says. “Our goal with Movies at Avondale Park is to fill the amphitheater with life.”
None of this would be possible without the wonderful sponsors who support Movies at Avondale Park. This year’s sponsors include Coca-Cola, Shipt, Sidewalk Film, Toms Sound, The Other Foundation, Birmingham Mountain Radio, the Forest Park and South Avondale Merchants Association, The Bates Group, Markstein BrandLab, RealtySouth, and representatives from the City of Birmingham District 3 and District 5.
So come early, grab something to eat and drink along 41st Street or in Forest Park, then bring your lawn chair or blanket and get ready for the film fun of Movies in Avondale Park.
